Dr. Laura Harris DVM

Professional Resume

Originally from North Carolina, Dr. Harris graduated from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in May of 1983. Following one year in a rural mixed-animal practice in southern Wisconsin, she moved to Phoenix, AZ to begin employment at Chaparral Animal Hospital where she treated both small animal and equine patients.

In 1988 she left Chaparral Animal Hospital and in 1989 purchased Village Plaza Animal Hospital, an AAHA accredited exotic and small animal hospital on Tatum Blvd. in Phoenix. For the next thirteen years Dr. Harris saw small animal and exotic patients in the hospital and equine medical and surgical cases in the field. Eventually both practice disciplines expanded and time limitations forced the sale of Village Plaza Animal Hospital.

Now spring brings breeding, foaling, preventative health care and early season horse shows. Summer heralds the onset of weather related health concerns, and through the fall and winter care of both pleasure and performance horses fills the practice appointment schedule.

Dr. Harris also served as a testing veterinarian for the equine substance abuse programs at numerous competitions (USEF, AQHA and FEI) for nineteen years beginning in 1990.

In July 2002 she became a member of the Veterinary Honor Roll for the Morris Animal Foundation. And, in July 2004 she was presented with the national My Vet Matters award by the American Association of Equine Practitioners. She was named Best in Scottsdale from 2009 through 2015. Currently, she is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr Harris is licensed to practice in five states: Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Kentucky.

Dr. Harris and her husband, Glenn Shearer are actively involved in re-homing efforts for horses and dogs and are associated with several rescue organizations. They also enjoy international travel, skiing, scuba diving, and trail riding. Their home in Scottsdale is shared by a menagerie of animals large and small.
